In preparation for a tour, guests at a Cypress-area assisted living facility put on vision-impairing glasses, placed spikes in their shoes and wore headphones playing various noises and voices before heading into a dark room.

The exercise was an attempt to understand the experience of individuals with dementia.

The Virtual Dementia Tour, presented by VITAS Healthcare, was held at the Cypress location of Village Green Alzheimer’s Care on Oct. 10.

Jackson Woodsworth, senior representative for VITAS, said the event is meant to give participants an idea of what it’s like to be an individual with dementia.

“The idea is to have this training experience and this dementia experience for families and caretakers here to understand what it is a loved one is going through, how to handle Alzheimer’s cases, how to handle different things as it relates to the disease process and also how hospice and their role intertwines with that,” he said.
